History and Scope of Services
Goodwill Homes Community Services, Inc. is a not-for-profit agency located in the southwest area of Memphis at 4590 Goodwill Rd that has served this community for over fifty years. In 1957, Goodwill became the first institution in the state for dependant and neglected black children. This agency grew out of the vision of Reverend J.W. Golden,
John A.Parson, Reverend S.A. Owen, Russell Doss,
Reverend J.A. McDaniel and Dr. Hollis Price. In 1971, the agency's charter was amended to include the operation of a community services agency.
Our mission is creating opportunities to maintain self-sufficient families. Our core values include: Mutual respect for clients and others; Quality Services; Accountability; Professionalism and Efficiency. Goodwill Homes Community Services, Inc. continues to help break the cycle of poverty and improving the life of the people we serve. The Agency delivers the most extensive social services in the southwest Memphis area. The Agency has focused on providing innovative leadership in its programing to empower others to become and remain self-sufficient. The following programs make up the Agency's scope of services:
Foster Homes for Children, Head Start, Adult Day Care, Senior Center, Jacqulyn Shropshire Literacy Center and the Bearman-Golden Gardens.
